Magnolia Teddy Bear

Just 20 feet high and 12 feet wide at maturity.

Cultivator: Magnolia grandiflora ‘Southern Charm’.

This remarkable Southern Magnolia looks like no other, thanks to its unusual, very attractive foliage. Instead of the usual oblong, slightly recurved leaves, it has rounded, cupped foliage held very densely. This gives it a “furry” teddy bear look you will love. Teddy Bear, an evergreen, perfumes the garden in spring with its 6- to 8-inch handsome, pure white blooms. The foliage is very showy–a shiny, rich dark green–keeping this tree fascinating year-round.

It’s easy to grow and quite tolerant of heat and drought, thriving even in semi-tropical climates. What a perfect specimen for the front yard, or perimeter planting in back.Teddy Bear thrives in any light from full sun to shade, and tolerates just about any well-drained garden soil. After about 5 years it will have reached 6 to 8 feet high, slowly reaching its full, majestic size of 20 feet tall, 12 feet wide. Enjoy this one-of-a-kind beauty.

Zones 6-10.

I have a Teddy Bear Magnolia tree in my front yard. Wondered why it never bloomed after three years. Found out it generally starts blooming after three to four years. I love this tree – so hearty and easy to care for!

I have a Teddy Bear that is a gorgeous tree near the front corner of my house. It was purchased for me as a housewarming when we built our home 6 1/2 years ago. It was 5 ft tall at that time and was the first plant I put in the ground after construction was finished. It has already reached it’s 20 ft height and 12 ft width. I love the look of the tree, but it has NEVER bloomed! I was told it would bloom by the time the tree was 5 yrs of age at the latest. It should easily be 10 years old (maybe older). What can I do to force it to bloom? I had one “expert” say that it must be too happy where it is to bloom, b/c it is such healthy tree. It makes me VERY sad to never have a single bloom on somthing I was so axcited to have due to the beautiful fragrant blooms that were to last through the summer. Can you/anyone help me?
