Magnolia Jane

This very late bloomer reblooms all summer and even into fall!

A showstopper in any setting, this Magnolia causes visitors to stop in their tracks and exclaim, “That can’t be a Magnolia, can it?!”. ‘Jane’ is not only a Magnolia, but one that has been around — though very difficult to find — for half a century. Developed to bloom late in the season, it not only avoids spring frosts, it practically runs up against fall ones.

The blooms arise just before the new spring foliage and then simply keep on coming, intermittently, all summer and into early fall. 4 inches across, they are a rich deep pink to purple on the outside, pure white within, so a fully blooming tree creates a lovely two-tone show. This tree reaches 25 to 30 feet tall and 20 feet wide in any sunny spot. Developed by the U.S. National Arboretum in the 1950′s to combat the problem of late frosts killing the Magnolia blossoms, ‘Jane’ is a neglected treasure.
