7 years of trialing have gone into this fine cultivar.
A bold new look for Agapanthus!
‘Back in Black’ sets its deep blue blooms on long, sturdy stems of gleaming ebony-black, standing out dramatically in the mid- to late summer garden. And as if that weren’t enough, after the blooms have passed, this plant offers a second season of beauty with large, handsome black seedpods that can be left on the plant or cut for Everlastings. The first cultivar to be released from the exciting Agapanthus breeding program of Dutch plantsman Piet Zonneveld, ‘Back in Black’ was meticulously trialed for 7 years before being put on the market in 2005.
This attention to quality shows both in its rich colors and in its vigor. In late spring and early summer, the flower spikes emerge bright green, matching the lush foliage of this plant. As the weather warms, they gradually darken to pure black. And ‘Back in Black’ is highly floriferous, rewarding you with a generous harvest of rich blooms and seedpods.Reaching 26 inches high and about a foot wide, this Agapanthus thrives in full sun and rich, well-drained soil. Its tall, erect, open-habit blooms are a stunning sight in garden or vase, and its two long seasons of color make it far more appealing than older cultivars. Consider adding this hardworking, colorful Africa Lily to your garden this season. Zones 6-9.
