2 Dozen or More Deep Maroon Blooms on Every Plant!
Rose-maroon or lilac flowers appear in mid- to late-summer on plants that reach up to 5 feet tall!
(Heirloom 1568) This charming Turk’s-Cap Lily boasts the widest geographical distribution of any in its family. Early- to midsummer blooming, it offers color-drenched 2-inch flowers of rose-maroon or lilac. The blooms arise 20 to 30 to the stem on plants up to 6 feet tall, decorated with whorled foliage. Stunning!
While many gardeners concentrate on the more flamboyant modern hybrids, species Lilies are no less beautiful and often much more garden-worthy. Cultivated for many centuries, they carry the aura of history and a legacy of permanence lacking in the johnny-come-lately hybrids. Newly planted bulbs may take a year to establish themselves before they make any growth, but once established, they form lasting colonies and are one of the easiest species to successfully cultivate.
Trouble-free and very long-lived, L. martagon is widely adapted and content in many adverse conditions. Much more tolerant of shade than most hybrids, it is a fine choice for the shrub border and woodland (or overgrown!) areas as well as herbaceous beds and borders. Consider it as a companion to fragrant flowering shrubs as well as perennials and other summer-blooming bulbs.
Zones 4-9.
