Iris ‘Diabolique’

Unusual Form and Very Rich, Deep Color

Starred by a navy-blue beard.

Spice up the Tall Bearded Iris display with this very richly-colored, heavily ruffled variety. ‘Diabolique’ boasts a more open, wide habit than most others in its family, spreading its petals almost flat to show off the flouncy curls and ruffles. Colored an intense shade of garnet-purple, these blooms are eye-catching and distinctively different.

Introduced by Schreiner in 1997, ‘Diabolique’ also boasts unusual navy-blue beards to punctuate the flowers. The overall silhouette of this flower is quite different from that of many Tall Beardeds — instead of being upright and rather tightly held, it is loose and lavish, with falls extended nearly straight out.

‘Diabolique’ flowers in mid- to late season on plants 38 inches tall, 18 to 24 inches wide. It demonstrates excellent heat and humidity resistance, extending its hardiness range through zone 9. Very adaptable to differing soil types, ‘Diabolique’ also tolerates periods of drought, though best flowering is always in rich, moist soil. Highly recommended. Zones 3-9.
