Giant Clouds of Lacy White
This native species is very low maintenance and untroubled by pests and diseases.
These fuzzy, lacy flowers have been described as having a vintage look, but this shrub’s bloom strength and vigor are pure modern. A cultivar of our native H. arborescens, White Dome (also known as Hills of Snow) is a giant-flowered Hydrangea hardy through zone 4, with “”droop-proof”" stems and a trouble-free nature. This shrub blooms on new wood, so even if a spring frost kills those first buds, more will arise as the season progresses. White Dome flowers from midsummer into fall, guaranteeing you weeks of magnificent 6- to 10-inch clouds of ivory-white.
The central fertile flowers are tiny, while the outer ring of infertile florets opens into large, elegant blooms, creating a nosegay look you will adore. Perfect for cutting and using in fresh and dried arrangements, they have much greater staying power than those of Annabelle, because the stems bounce back after rain instead of drooping.White Dome is ideal for mass plantings, woodland settings, and the sunny to partly shaded border. It forms a rounded shrub 4 to 6 feet high and about 3 to 4 feet wide, with very large, dark green, toothed foliage that keeps the shrub looking nice even when not in bloom. The flowers have a subtly sweet scent, and the plant is trouble-free.
In the wild, H. arborescens is found on rocky slopes, in woodlands, and along creek banks; in your garden it is very adaptable to differing soils and moisture levels, provided the drainage is good. You will delight in this carefree native treasure! Zones 4-9.
