Heuchera Midnight Rose

Semi-evergreen and very adaptable.

The most exciting new Heuchera to come along in many seasons, ‘Midnight Rose’ is so heat- and humidity-tolerant that it keeps its extraordinary colors right through the dog days of August and into autumn. A fine semi-evergreen sport of H. ‘Obsidian,’ it is simply a must-have for every discriminating gardener. The new spring foliage is arresting — large, softly lobed and rounded leaves of pure black with pink spots so bright one might expect them to glow in the dark.

By summer the black has turned a rich shade of royal purple and the pink calmed a bit, with some freckles even showing cream highlights, but these strong colors remain all season and throughout autumn on plants just 10 inches high and 16 inches wide. Unbelievably showy, ‘Midnight Rose’ complements all surrounding foliage and flower colors while shining through as a showpiece in its own right. In summer, small white blooms dangle high above the foliage on 2-foot stems, adding little ornamental interest but suitable for cutting and attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds.

A mounding, lush plant, ‘Midnight Rose’ looks fresh and healthy even during extreme weather, and is quite adaptable, thriving in sun in the northern protion of its hardiness range, afternoon or dappled shade farther south and west.’Midnight Rose’ was discovered by Terri Poindexter of Behnke Nursery and, like most Heucheras, is superbly resistant to rabbits and deer, as well as many environmental stresses. An utterly unique perennial, it deserves a place of honor in your garden. Very highly recommended. Zoens 4-9
