Rich Red Tones for Fall
Perfect for containers as well as the border.
Perfect for ground cover, edging, the border, or containers, ‘Beni-kaze’ is a splendid new Japanese Forest Grass that turns bright shades of red in autumn and delights from spring till frost with a rippled, slightly twisted texture suggesting movement. Easy to grow in sun or part shade, it adds a note of formality and unusual beauty to any setting.
The plant reaches 2 to 3 feet tall and slightly wider, with slender, tapering, pointed leaves erupting from the center into cascading layers of color. Fresh green from spring through summer, they look lush and healthy, but at the first hint of chilly weather begin assuming red tones. A breathtaking sight in a large planting, even a single potted ‘Beni-kaze’ adds lovely color and texture to patio or deck.
Its name means “red wind” in Japanese, and the slightly twisted hold of this foliage is quite nice for suggesting movement in the garden. Set it alongside Hostas and other large-leaved perennials in the shade garden, or make its home among early-summer blooming plants in the sunny border, where its late-season beauty can be appreciated. Versatile and very easy to grow, ‘Beni-kaze’ is left alone by deer and ideal even for open meadow and woodland settings. Zones 5-9.
