The ‘Connoisseur’s Citrus’

Moro Blood Orange is a variety of orange (Citrus sinensis) with crimson, blood-colored flesh. The fruit is smaller than an average orange. Its skin is usually pitted, but can be smooth.

Blood oranges are called the ‘connoisseur’s citrus‘ because they are sweet and highly flavored with a hint of strawberry and raspberry aftertaste. The name ‘Blood’ derives from its red blotches on the fruit’s skin and its reddish flesh and juice coloring.

The Moro Blood Orange is the most common of the pigmented oranges marketed in the U.S. It is a hybrid of ancient origin, possibly between the pomelo and the tangerine believed to have originated at the beginning of the 19th century in the citrus-growing area around Lentini (in the Province of Siracusa in Sicily. The orange-colored peel is commonly blushed with a burgundy color.

The Moro blood orange is the most brightly colored of the blood oranges. Anthocyanin, a pigment common to many flowers and fruit, (but uncommon in citrus fruits) is the same pigment that colors purple grapes) and is responsible for its distinctive flesh color and rind blush.

The blood orange is a very popular fruit along the Mediterranean Sea. The fruit of the Moro Blood Orange tree is of medium size and is very productive. Moro is also the earliest ripening of the blood oranges and usually ripens in the late winter and early spring in addition to being hardy to about 27 degrees F. The fruit is orange colored at maturity with light pink blush or red streaks at advanced maturity. It is juicy, deeply pigmented (almost violet-red) with a pleasant flavor.

The Moro Blood Orange tree is of medium vigor and size, spreading and round topped; very productive fruit (generally in clusters of three or more).

The 3 most common types of blood oranges are: the Tarocco (native to Italy), the Sanguinello (native to Spain), and the Moro, the newest variety of the three.

The Moro is the most colorful of the three types, with a deep purple flesh and reddish orange rind. This fruit has a distinct, sweet flavor with a hint of raspberry particular to blood oranges. Moro are “full-blood” oranges, meaning that the flesh ranges from orange-veined with ruby coloration, to vermilion, to vivid crimson, and nearly to black.

Health Benefits of Oranges

Oranges provide more fiber than any of the top 20 fruits or vegetables consumed today. Eating a medium-sized orange provides 28 percent of the recommended daily amount of dietary fiber. Sicilian Red oranges contain nutritional and preventive properties. A good source of Vitamin C, the fruit’s red pigment, anthocyanin, is an antioxidant that reduces the risks associated with many ailments, including age-related illnesses.

Blood oranges contain about 130% of the recommended amounts of Vitamin C, and diminish the risk of heart disease, some types of cancer and “bad” cholesterol build-up. They may also reduce the risk of cataracts. One medium-size orange contains 260 milligrams of potassium, 15% of the FDA’s daily recommendation. Potassium also lowers blood pressure, decreasing the risk of heart attacks and strokes, helps to regulate heart rhythm, and affects body growth and maintenance.

Oranges can also be a valuable source of iron, calcium and vitamin A.

‘Kaffir’ is the classic lime used in Thai cooking, its leaves and fruit are especially fragrant.

Each plant is selected for its size, shape, root health and potential productivity

Enjoy theses citrus trees indoors in winter and on the patio all summer long

Delicious zest adds flavor to a variety of dishes

Ships bare root

Dimensions: (Bare root trees are 26-28″ H from soil line at time of shipment)

The kaffir lime (Citrus hystrix DC., Rutaceae), also known as kieffer lime, makrut, or magrood, (Bai Ma-gkood,PewMa-gkrood) is a type of lime native to Indonesia, commonly used in Thai cuisine, and widely grown worldwide as a backyard shrub. The kaffir lime tree is well suited to container growing. The fruit is rough, bumpy green and grows on very thorny bush with very fragrant leaves. Even a small scratch of the lime releases a roomful of refreshing fragrance, like a fragrant bouquet of citrus blossoms.

Even though the kaffir lime is not the most beautiful fruit, it is incredibly important in Southeast Asian cooking (especially Thai recipes). Kaffir lime leaves cannot be replaced with any other type of citrus leaves. Their flavor is so important that anyone following a Thai recipe should take the time to find and use them as their special characteristics are irreplaceable.

In most regions of Thailand, the kaffir lime is so beloved that almost everyone’s home in the countryside has at least one tree growing in the yard. Because its strong flavor can over power the more subtle ones in a dish, the rind should be used sparingly, grated or chopped finely and reduced in a mortar with other paste ingredients until indistinguishable.

Some recommend that the name kaffir lime should be avoided in favor of makrud lime because kaffir is an offensive term in some cultures. For this reason, some South Africans refer to the fruit as K-lime. However, kaffir lime appears to be a much more common description.

Uses

The kaffir lime’s hourglass-shaped leaves (comprising the leaf blade plus a flattened, leaf-like leaf-stalk or petiole) are widely used in Thai cuisine (for dishes such as tom yum), Lao cuisine, and Cambodian cuisine, for the base paste known as “Krueng“. The leaves are also popular in Indonesian cuisine (Javanese and Balinese), for sayur assam – literally sour vegetables, and are also used along with Indonesian bay leaf for chicken and fish. They are also found in Malay and Burmese cuisines.

Kaffir lime is also used as a very effective cleaner, cleanser, and natural deodorizer.

The fruit is sometimes referred to in Indonesia as jeruk obat – literally “medicine citrus” because the juice and rinds of the kaffir lime are used in traditional Indonesian medicine.

Kaffir lime shampoo leaves the hair squeaky clean and invigorates the scalp. It is believed to freshen one’s mental outlook and ward off evil spirits. Kaffir lime has also been used for ages as a natural bleach to remove tough stains.

In folk medicine, the juice of kaffir lime is said to promote gum health and is recommended for use in brushing teeth and gums. The rind is an ingredient in medical tonics believed to be good for the blood and the essential oils in the fruit are incorporated into various ointments. Like lemon grass and galanga, the rind is also known to have beneficial properties for the digestive system.

C. latifolia, is known by many names such as Tahitian lime, Bearss lime, and Persian lime. The nearly-thornless trees grow vigorously to a medium-large size with a spreading form and have white blossoms. Persian lime trees are more cold-hardy than Mexican lime trees and should do well in areas where lemons are successfully grown. To date, all Persian lime trees are known to carry wood pocket, which can cause serious deterioration of the trees.

The fruits of Persian lime are larger than Mexican Limes, approximately 2-2 ½ inches in diameter, and have a thin, smooth, light yellow rind at full maturity. The seedless flesh is pale greenish-yellow, acidic, juicy and finely-textured. Once Persian limes reach full maturity, usually late autumn to early winter, they drop from the tree.

Both tree and fruit of the Bearss variety correspond closely with the Tahiti description. The flowers are devoid of viable pollen also, contain exceedingly few functional ovules, and the fruits are regularly seedless. The Bearss variety is triploid in its genetic constitution (Bacchi, 1940). Moreover, the comparatively rare seeds which occur are highly monoembryonic also.

According to Webber (1943), this variety originated about 1895 on the place of T. J. Bearss, a nurseryman at Porterville, California. While the facts are unknown, it presumably occurred as a seedling of a tree grown from seed from a fruit of Tahitian origin. It seems first to have been described and illustrated by Lelong (1902) and was introduced and promoted by the Fancher Creek Nursery Company of Fresno in 1905.

Although the Tahiti lime was reported to be growing in Florida as early as 1883 (Ziegler and Wolfe, 1961), it is not known when Bearss was introduced there. Moreover, the present lime industry in Florida is based on a variety known as Persian. For many years, therefore, it appeared that the two varieties were different though obviously similar. Comparisons conducted in California, however, although not wholly satisfactory because of complicating disease factors, strongly support the conclusion that the two clones are identical. If this is indeed the case, it seems highly probable that this variety originated considerably earlier than Webber reports.

‘Heritage’ is a classic name in raspberries, a red variety with sweet flavor and great holding ability on the vine. Unlike some varieties, ‘Heritage’ won’t fall to pieces if you delay picking the ripe fruit a day or two; it stays firm, juicy, and super-flavorful. Plants are very vigorous and resist Powdery Mildew.Raspberries like full sun and good air circulation.

They do best in enriched garden soil that is moisture-retentive but well-drained. Plant about 3 feet apart in the row, or train up a trellis. Plant about 1 inch deep in heavy soils, 2 inches in loose, sandy soils. For best growth, cut back immediately after planting, to prevent the plant from setting fruit the first year. This will give you much stronger growth and better harvests in years to come. Water well during growth, and consider mulching to conserve water until the following spring, when the mulch should be removed to let the plants warm up. In winter, cut back to about 5 canes per crown.

This is a dessert grape — large, seedless, extra-juicy, and blue-black.

If you’ve been thinking about introducing a grape arbor into your garden design, I’ve got a gourmet dessert variety that will not only delight your palate, but also simplify your gardening. ‘Glenora’ is a vigorous, highly productive, disease-resistant grape that looks as good as it tastes. Easy to grow and eager to fruit, it is the perfect variety for beginners and seasoned “arborists” alike to grow and enjoy.

The fruit is simply scrumptious — blue-black, extra-large, and entirely seedless, with an abundance of sweet juice and a unique spicy under bite. The skin is quite thin, giving you more real grape flavor, and the flesh is firm but tender and juicy-sweet. Until you’ve tasted this grape straight from your own garden, you won’t believe such a combination of flavors could exist in such a small, perfect package.Expect a bumper crop every year, too — the tiny white flowers are set early (late spring) and the fruit quickly ripens, extending the season by a few weeks.

‘Glenora’ is a grape you can grow just about anywhere in the country except the far north, too — it is quite able to hold its own despite heat, humidity, and poor soil, though it prefers a light and sandy mixture for best growth. You’ll never have to pamper this grape to get big, satisfying crops! If given the recommended annual pruning, this vine reaches 8 feet tall and can spread almost indefinitely. It is ideal for training up an arbor, pergola, or trellis. And unlike many other varieties, which were devastated by Phylloxera when this disease spread through the European crops, ‘Glenora’ is completely resistant to this disease. It also shows superior ability to resist mildew, making it suitable for humid southern climates. Give ‘Glenora’ a try this year and find out just how easy growing your own grapes really is.

This small tree from Russia deserves much wider visibility in U.S. gardens. Large white blooms in spring are succeeded by huge, waxy, highly fragrant yellow fruit. Quince is used in jams and baked goods in much of Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, but the tender, fruit of this tree is so delicious you will probably eat it raw.

Who would guess that this modest little fruit tree has the ability to transform your patio into a fragrant, colorful oasis — or perfume your home deliciously year-round? Ideal for container growth everywhere in the U.S., Nagami is the ultimate potted fruit tree — easy to grow, evergreen, fragrant, and heavy-bearing.The small, oval leaves are evergreen on this well-branched tree, and the bright orange fruit is about 2 to 3 inches long. Very sweet, it makes a good flavoring for sauces, or may be eaten fresh off the branch.

Outdoors this tree blooms heavily in spring, while inside it will flower intermittently all year round. The small white blossoms are highly fragrant and very pleasing!Nagami is grafted onto Carrizo Citrange rootstock, and reaches 8 feet tall and 6 feet wide if its container is large enough — in smaller pots, it will remain more restrained. Give it full sun (or bright, direct indoor light) to part shade and plenty of water; fertilize regularly for best flowering and fruiting. It’s just that simple, it can also be espaliered very easily.

Zones 9-10 in the garden; everywhere in containers.

Enjoy luscious tropical fruit year-round in your living room from this vigorous, evergreen dwarf! Fast-growing and pest-free, this Mexican native produces two crops a year of soft, black-skinned avocados with a flavor so rich you need nothing else for a scrumptious guacamole!Self-pollination follows the winter blooms, and the fruit ripens year-round (though the first crop may take up to 14 months). In mild climates it’s also an excellent patio specimen, but bring it indoors beside a sunny window before frost. Capable of reaching 10 feet tall, but simple to keep pinched back to desired height and width, the Gillogly Avocado is both attractive and productive. Comes with easy culture instructions.

Plant with Apple Honeycrisp for a heavy, delicious crop!

If you’ve never tasted a Fuji Apple straight from the tree, you don’t know what you’ve been missing! This Japanese Apple is quickly becoming the most popular in the U.S., and once you grow this vigorous, productive little tree, you’ll see why. Not only is the fruit delectable, but it begins bearing from a very young age, and the picked fruit can be refrigerated for up to a year without losing its texture or flavor!Fuji Red is a round, crisp, ultra-juicy fruit that you’ll smell long before you see — the aroma is enticing, combining sweet and spicy scents.

It’s unforgettable when eaten fresh, and its staying power after picking is legendary. No more hastily baking pies to take care of the huge bounty from the tree — Fuji Red lets you eat it over time without sacrificing that crisp bite and rich flavor. And this tree is the ideal size for the home garden. It reaches about 12 feet tall and 10 feet wide, and begins setting fruit much younger than most other Apples. You do need a pollinator for Red Fuji, and I recommend Granny Smith, which not only increases Red Fuji’s yields, but produces a bumper crop of its own!But the fruit is only one part of this tree’s beauty. In mid- to late spring, masses of tiny (1/4-inch) white flowers cover the branches, making a lovely addition to the sunny garden. Because Red Fuji is a semi-dwarf, you can plant it even in a small garden setting, and enjoy its beauty up close. The fruit ripens in early to mid fall in most areas. Enjoy!

Large, sweet apples stay crisp even after 5 months or more in storage!

Honeycrisp bears loads of apples with the most crispy, crunchy texture we’ve ever encountered and are fast becoming one of America’s favorite apples. The large, 3-inch (or more!) fruits display a lovely scarlet red mottling over a deep yellow background, and their juicy cream-colored flesh has a sweet, delicate flavor. Exceptional crispness is what lends these apples their distinct character, and they retain their crunchy texture even after 5 months or more in storage. Honeycrisp apples have been consistently rated superior to the fruit of McIntosh, Honeygold, Regent, and Delicious and make excellent dessert apples for eating fresh or in pies, applesauce, and apple crisps.

Developed at the University of Minnesota, this cross of Macoun and Honeygold reliably bears an abundant crop of large fruit even in the coldest winters and with no flower thinning required. The fruit ripens evenly over a 3-week period and hangs well on the tree even after the optimum harvest period has passed. These dwarf-size trees reach 8 to 10 feet tall and wide at maturity. This is an outstanding apple variety that deserves a place in every home orchard.

Spectacular white flowers in late spring have made this rare Japanese native one of the most sought-after of all Magnolias. Each sparkling flower is charmingly pendulous and intensely fragrant, with a prominent rose-crimson central boss that matures into an attractive pink seed pod, extending the ornamental effect. Cut blossoms make an especially attractive display on your mantle or as a centerpiece for your table.

This small bushy tree reaches 15 feet high and 12 feet wide in 15 years and is, like all Magnolias, pollution tolerant and easy to transplant from containers. Prefers a somewhat acidic, moisture-retentive soil enriched with organics. Plant in a location sheltered from wind and relatively free of roots from other trees and shrubs. Tolerates full sun in the north. In the south it performs best in filtered shade.

One of the most desirable hybrid Magnolias, especially for the small garden, due to its controlled yet vigorous growth, Leonard Messel is a multiple award-winning Magnolia.

This chance seedling forms a multi-stemmed, densely branched small tree that grows in a rather upright habit, blooming profusely in early spring on naked branches. Very wind- and frost-resistant, the flowers are single, 5 inches across, with 12 strap-like petals that are creamy white inside and suffused with pink outside. Tolerant of a wide range of soils, this tree must have excellent drainage. Thrives in dappled shade, such as in deciduous woodlands.

A showstopper in any setting, this Magnolia causes visitors to stop in their tracks and exclaim, “That can’t be a Magnolia, can it?!”. ‘Jane’ is not only a Magnolia, but one that has been around — though very difficult to find — for half a century. Developed to bloom late in the season, it not only avoids spring frosts, it practically runs up against fall ones.

The blooms arise just before the new spring foliage and then simply keep on coming, intermittently, all summer and into early fall. 4 inches across, they are a rich deep pink to purple on the outside, pure white within, so a fully blooming tree creates a lovely two-tone show. This tree reaches 25 to 30 feet tall and 20 feet wide in any sunny spot. Developed by the U.S. National Arboretum in the 1950’s to combat the problem of late frosts killing the Magnolia blossoms, ‘Jane’ is a neglected treasure.

Strong Architectural Presence and Glowing Autumn Color

The famous Lion’s Head Maple holds its foliage in interesting tufts. Sometimes called Lion’s Head Maple or ‘Mejishi’, ‘Shishigashira’ is an unusual, bold addition to a garden indeed! Its deeply curled and crinkled bright green leaves are held in close-knit bunches, adding to the interesting architectural shape of its branches.

Spring brings small reddish-purple flowers, but the densely packed tufts of foliage often conceals them from view. Quite different from most Japanese Maples, Shishigashira develops its fall color much later in the season and is one of the last to flaunt its golden orange and burnished crimson tones. Its ornamental appeal continues into the winter months as its bark takes on a greenish yellow hue.

If you’re looking for a Japanese Maple with unusual four-season appeal, Shishigashira is it! Although the Lion’s Head Maple prefers a sheltered location in dappled shade, it will develop its strongest autumn color in full sun and demonstrates a great resistance to leaf burn. Reaching just 7 feet in 10 years, its slow growth rate is desirable for training as bonsai or growing in patio containers and small garden spaces.

The color finale brightens your winter landscape with incredible coral-colored twigs. Also known as a ‘Sen kaki,’ the famous Coral Bark Maple displays a sensational coral tone on its twigs in winter, making a fabulous display in an otherwise subdued landscape.

The coral red contrasts beautifully against snow, sky, or grass. Delicate foliage is light green during the growing season, brightly yellow in autumn. Growing to 10 feet high and wide, this is a rare horticultural gem that will add distinction to any property! Especially choice shrubs or small trees, Japanese Maples are magnificent in form and foliage, delicately textured in spring and summer, and, in many cases, unequaled in fall color. Very tolerant of heat and humidity, they add year-round interest to the garden.
Their beauty increases with age making them a lifetime investment in the landscape.Wayside is pleased to offer these choice Japanese Maples, most (like ‘Sango Kaku’) are quite rare in this country, yet all are proven for superb performance in American gardens.

To avoid seeding variation, we offer only asexually-reproduced selections. Spur pruning of established plants will ensure a good growth of young, highly colored twigs for winter display.

If you’ve tried growing very finely-cut-leafed Japanese Maples before, chances are you’ve not been impressed. I know We’ve never been satisfied with their garden performance — which is why Emerald Lace is such a welcome introduction. Not only is it spectacularly beautiful, with lacy leaves that turn from yellow-green to deep emerald to bright burgundy with the seasons, but it’s a fast-growing, robust little tree that will delight you for decades!

The foliage really does resemble lace, so intricate and fine are its divisions. Casting fascinating shadows on the ground, it emerges a light chartreuse in spring — airy, delicate, and exquisitely lovely! In summer it deepens to the darkest, richest green We have ever seen on this king of Japanese Maple. Then, with the first cold weather of fall, it turns a vivid burgundy-red. The pendulous branches are even magnificent against the winter landscape! For four-season interest, you can’t top Emerald Lace!Within 10 years this tree has reached its mature size of 6 feet high and wide.

Best in partial shade, it is an awe-inspiring companion to blue-leafed Hostas and cool pink Heucheras! Or set it in solitary splendor in the front yard, for an unforgettable “landmark” accent plant that will become the favorite of the entire neighborhood.

Emerald Lace was selected as a seedling in Charlotte, North Carolina, and has been wowing plantsmen ever since! Like most Japanese Maples, it is quite tolerant of heat and humidity, growing readily in the sweltering south yet happy right through zone 5 in the north. Tolerant of any soil type provided the drainage is good and adequate water is available, it is an easy-to-grow pleasure for any partly shaded spot! Space trees 7 feet apart.
