Simply the Best Perennial for Your Shade Garden

Blooming for up to 5 months, this variety is widely adaptable from north to south and is very resistant to deer, rabbit, and voles.

After 50 years of dedicated English breeding and 10 years of collection and ongoing selection, we proudly offer our patrons the very finest perennial introduction of the decade. Royal Heritage Hellebores are destined to supplant even Hostas as the premiere carefree perennial for shade (and partial sun). They represent the absolute best in recent British and American breeding, and include a wider range of colors and a better adaptability than older varieties.

Uniquely superior for its wide range of sumptuous colors (purple, red, near-black, white, green, pink and even yellow) captured by 2-inch flowers with overlapping petals, the Helleborus Royal Heritage Strain brings the varied and lovely world of Hellebores right into your garden. In our trials the strain produced flowers for nearly 5 months, from winter through spring. Cut and floated, they make an excellent centerpiece, lasting up to two weeks. In the garden, they gradually dry out on the plant, fading to vintage shades of their former color and making a pleasant rustling when disturbed by spring breezes.

A gardener’s “dream plant” — very permanent, very low-maintenance, very disease-free, very pest-free, the Royal Heritage Strain Hellebore Lenten Rose are easy to establish from our vigorous container stock. Over the years each will develop into sturdy, long-lived clumps 18 to 24 inches high and 2 to 3 feet across. Totally tolerant of heat and humidity, they even withstand periods of drought, if given well-drained, moisture-retentive soil. Can even thrive in clay. Begin your Hellebore garden today for many years of ever-increasing beauty.

Plant Patent #18,783. cv: ‘Katie Saul.’

Here it is at last — the first bicolor Echinacea the world has ever seen! Each petal on these large 5-inch blooms shades from deep rosy-pink at the base through coral, orange, and finally gold at the tips. And as if this weren’t enough, Echinacea Summer Sky is also the most fragrant member of the Big Sky™ Echinaceas, with a pervasive sweet scent in garden or vase.

These 5-inch blooms keep their colors beautifully, even in hot weather.

Developed by Itsaul Plants of Georgia, the Big Sky series of Echinaceas are crosses of E. purpurea — the traditional Purple Coneflower — and E. paradoxa. They are heavy-blooming, unusually long-lasting, and sport a range of brand-new colors for the family. In addition to Summer Sky, try new Echinacea ‘After Midnight’ Coneflower.

Summer Sky reaches 30 to 36 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide, well-branched and sturdy. Butterflies and bees adore its huge central brown cone in summer, while songbirds feast upon its dried seeds in fall and early winter. Deer tend to leave this plant alone, making it a fine choice for open gardens and meadows as well as the border.

Plant Summer Sky in any moist, well-drained garden soil exposed to full sun, and keep it very well-watered and fed the first season or two. Once established, it is wonderfully tolerant of heat, humidity, poor soil, cold, and even drought. Summer Sky is the most exciting new introduction of the season, and it’s certain to sell out quickly. Please order yours promptly to begin growing this magnificent breeding breakthrough.

Much less temperamental than other Heucheras, this unusual species is rugged and eager to please!

The most beautiful Heuchera yet is also one of the very best for your garden, especially if you live in a hot, humid climate. Caramel is much more heat- and humidity-tolerant than other Heucheras, and its vigorous growth of honey-apricot leaves and clusters of light pink blooms will keep the shade garden colorful from spring through fall. The new leaves unfurl bright gold in spring, covered with a fine down that remains on the leaves as the seasons change. With warmer weather, the leaves take on apricot hues, making the plant glow even more warmly in the shade. And in midsummer — after all other Heucheras in the garden have already bloomed! — clusters of whitish-pink blossoms arise on slender 18-inch stems.

Delightful Heuchera is a native American plant, and this unusual species (H. villosa) is native to the Southeast, so you know Caramel is prepared to take some heat and humidity. A terrific garden presence, it’s also indifferent to unseasonable cold and is content in a wide range of soils (though preferring acidic) and, despite being a shade lover, really tolerates quite a lot of sun.In the partly-shaded garden, Caramel makes the ideal companion to Ferns of all types, blue- and green-leafed Hostas, and Brunnera. Of course it’s right at home among other Heucheras, as well as its cousins Heucherella and Tiarella. Reaching 15 inches high and 20 inches wide, Caramel makes a wonderful overplanting for late spring bulbs, an edging for garden paths, and a fine container subject. But I like it best in the border, where it can create great drifts of warm color that last through three seasons.Space these plants about 18 inches apart in part shade to full sun

Exceptionally long-lasting, hardy, and floriferous Shasta Daisy.

Every garden needs one plant that blooms its head off for months and months, with minimal attention from you. Every garden also needs a showpiece flower, easy to grow but fabulous and exotic in the vase. And when you can get both of these things in one plant, you know you’ve got a winner. ‘Highland White Dream’ is a standout performer that wows visitors in indoor arrangements, fills the garden with snowy color, and practically grows itself.

The snowy white blooms are 4 to 5 inches wide and semi-double, arising on strong-stemmed plants that never need staking, even when in heavy bloom. The flowers begin in early summer and continue well into fall. This Shasta is also renowned for its long-lived hardiness. This plant reaches 3 feet tall and about 2 to 2 1/2 feet wide in the sunny garden, indifferent to soil quality, heat, humidity, cold, and other vagaries of nature. Given good drainage and adequate water, ‘Highland White Dream’ will outperform all other Shastas. And it should — although fairly new to market, this Shasta Daisy has been in breeding since 1954, and has been trialed everywhere from Finland to New Zealand.

Routinely scoring near-perfect marks in cutflower competitions, it is the centerpiece of any bouquet, and its go-anywhere color and simple daisy form make it flexible — dress it up Poppies or let it romp among Scabiosas! Later in the season, it’s a delightful companion to Asters. An indispensable plant for any garden.

The Best Shasta for Cut Flowers.

These double blooms are petal-packed for a frizzy, frilly look.

Daisy ‘Sante’ is the best Shasta we have ever seen for cut flowers. The stems are exceptionally thick and sturdy, providing a few extra days of color and excellent support in the vase. The flowers are large, fully double, and packed with frizzy petals that give the flowers a rounded, pompon look. If you love to cut blooms from your garden, this is new Leucanthemum you MUST try. Rather than the traditional daisy shape of most Shastas, ‘Sante’ has a pompon above a large, frilly skirt of outer petals. The inner petals are twisted, short, slender, and notched, creating a frazzled look.

These blooms are large and very abundant, offering many weeks of bright color indoors or out.’Sante’ is a compact plant, just 26 inches tall and about 18 inches wide. It’s ideal for the middle of the sunny perennial border, and for cutting and cottage gardens. Give it plenty of sunshine and enriched, well-drained soil for best flowering. It tolerates heat and humidity well, and is a vigorous grower.Complementing every other color in the garden, ‘Sante’ offers a wealth of crisp white color just when the garden needs it most!

Enormous Blooms on Petite PlantsPerfect for cutting or garden enjoyment.

A wonderfully flamboyant Shasta Daisy, this European native boasts huge 3 1/2-inch semi-double blooms on plants that are scarcely a foot tall and wide. Ideal for cutting, they arise profusely all summer, making ‘Goldrausch’ a standout in garden or container.

These blooms may remind you of Sunflowers, with their widely-spaced outer petals of pure white, notched at the tips and of differing lengths and sizes. They provide a crisp, fresh backdrop to the inner ring of shorter, slightly twisted, slender petals of yellow and gold, surrounding a large amber-gold cone. A single bloom adds distinction to an indoor arrangement, and a whole vase full is almost an embarrassment of riches.

Like all Shastas, ‘Goldrausch’ appreciates plenty of sunshine and excellent drainage. Just 14 inches high and 12 inches wide, it is very well-branched and vigorous, reblooming eagerly when the first flowers are cut or deadheaded. Expect a long season of exciting form and extra-large blooms from this compact perennial.

These pristine white blooms complement all neighboring plants!

Plant Patent #16,054.

With all the exciting new colors and forms of Echinacea lately, there has only been one thing missing: FRAGRANCE. And now that ‘Fragrant Angel’ is here, we can truly say that Echinacea has it all!

These blooms are 4 to 5 inches wide, with a double row of long, slender white petals surrounding a large orange cone. They arise atop sturdy, stiff stems that won’t flop over in summer heat, making them a good choice for cutting as well as garden use. And the sweet scent is so enticing, wafting through the garden or home.

The blooms begin in midsummer and continue well into fall, particularly if they’re cut or deadheaded promptly. They arise on plants 30 inches tall and 24 inches wide — compact enough for containers and small-space gardens!

Be sure to leave the last blooms on the plant, for birds adore the seed-filled cones and will pose on this Coneflower throughout autumn and into winter, pecking out the last treats of the season.

Echinacea is tolerant of adverse conditions from dry, poor soil to heat and humidity. It thrives in full sun but will tolerate a bit of shade, and needs very little care once established in the garden. Give ‘Fragrant Angel’ a place of honor in your landscape this season! Zones 3-8.

Hemerocallis ‘Jungle Beauty’: A whole new color from master Daylily breeder Dr. Darrel Apps!

Break the monotony of yellow and pink Daylilies with a few of these electrifying violet-black giants!

A full 6 inches across and suffused with smoky-dark color that is the nearest thing yet to a true black in Daylilies, ‘Jungle Beauty’ is a color breakthrough extraordinaire!Arising in early summer on 30-inch plants, these huge blooms are intensified by their vivid chartreuse throat, which only serves to heighten the black tones of the thick, waxy petals. A magnificent sight in the sunny garden, containers, along the walkway, or anywhere else you need a little dramatic color. (Or make that a LOT of dramatic color — ‘Jungle Beauty’ keeps flowering for weeks!)

Jungle Beauty was bred by Dr. Darrel Apps, one of America’s premier Daylily hybridizers. Like all of Dr. Apps’s creations, it is eminently gardenworthy, a diploid that goes totally dormant in winter, so that it can withstand the extreme cold of zone 3 without losing a petal next summer! It withstands heat, humidity, and drought as well as cold, and isn’t fussy about garden soil as long as it’s well-drained. This is the perennial to plant along the blazing driveway or in that hard-to-water spot in the backyard! It will flourish!’Jungle Beauty’ combines with just about any other Daylily color, especially pinks and creams. It is also a fine companion to all your early-summer sun-lovers.

Daylilies are also the traditional succession planting to Daffodils, because their strappy, fountain-like foliage helps hide the dying stems of the Daffodils as the season changes. Find a place of honor for this brand-new color today!Space these plants, which reach up to 2 feet wide, about 18 inches apart to give them room to spread, then plan to dig them up and divide them in 3 or 4 years for even more spectacular garden color! Zones 3-8.”

Hemerocallis Forty-second Street: Rely on Daylily Forty-second Street for over-the-top beauty and plenty of it!

This stunning double-flowered, bicolor is a rebloomer that regales you with one heavy flush of color in early to midsummer, then reappears at the end of the season for an encore!

And when you consider that each flower measures 5 inches wide and is suffused with rich pink and rosy tones hard to find on most Daylilies, Forty-second Street gives you almost an embarrassment of riches! These petal-packed flowers are just gorgeous, with neatly crimped edges making every curve stand out. Special enough to use as a cutflower for a day-long arrangement of exceptional beauty, they were the runner-up for the American Hemerocallis Society’s Award for Best Double, and one look shows you why. Rich color in a lovely combination, elegantly held on large flowers — you just can’t beat this look! But attractive flowers are just the beginning of Forty-second Street’s charms. It is a reblooming Daylily, which means you can expect a second flush of bloom toward fall — just when the garden needs a shot of warm color! And even after the blooms pass, Forty-second Street stays lovely, with fresh, evergreen foliage right through winter in all but the most northern climates! A great choice for mass planting, edging, and other standout garden features.Like all Daylilies, Forty-second Street is exceptionally easy to grow, thriving in just about any sunny, well-drained spot. Once established in your garden, it is very forgiving of heat, humidity, drought, and poor soil — not only will it thrive, it will spread, and you can divide the plant every few years to double your flower power and give away new plants to friends. Wherever you plant it, Forty-second Street will flourish for many years with a minimum of help from you! Enjoy this super-easy, super-beautiful plant! Zones 5-9

Hemerocallis Golden Zebra : Finally, the day has come — a variegated Daylily with foliage as beautiful as the flowers, and just as reliable!

Every leaf of this plant is boldly striped in gold, for an elegant look in bed and border that lasts well beyond bloomtime!

18 inches high and 2 feet wide, this plant is perfect for edging or a large planting near the front of the border, where you can enjoy the showy leaves en masse. They emerge bright yellow-striped in spring and keep their color all summer, beautifully complementing the 3-inch golden flowers that arise all season (but most heavily in midsummer).Golden Zebra has been trialed for 5 years in gardens across the country, and has been found to remain true to name, with no reversion to green (as some variegated plants will do). You can depend on it to be just as tolerant of heat, humidity, drought, and cold as other Daylilies — the only difference is the extra beauty.Golden Zebra makes a nice companion to blue Salvia, red Coreopsis, and Russian Sage, among others. Space the plants 18 inches apart, water them in well the first year, and watch them take off! Zones 4-9

Hemerocallis ‘Clothed in Glory’: Lovely “”piecrust”" edging accentuates the gold!

This glorious Daylily should have been named Wreathed in Smiles, because that’s what you’ll be the moment these giant, gorgeous blooms begin appearing all over easy-to-grow, compact plants!

The flowers are bright magenta with a stunning golden “”goosebump”" edge — and when you consider that you get 15 to 17 blooms on every stem, imagine how your garden will look when a large planting is in full bloom. The flowers measure 7 inches across, and the “”piecrust”" edges accentuate each petal, so that the blooms appear even larger. And this plant is just 18 inches high and wide; compact enough for a container, yet large enough to make a big impact as edging or in the border.A midsummer bloomer, ‘Clothed in Glory’ is a tetraploid with twice the get-up-and-grow power of traditional diploids. It isn’t as cold-hardy as varieties that go totally dormant, but it can be heavily mulched for success right up to zone 4, and the evergreen foliage is a huge plus in warm-climate gardens. Vigorous, exceptionally productive, and long-blooming, it’s destined to be a mainstay of the perennial garden.

‘Clothed in Glory’ was propagated by division, NOT by tissue culture. This is important, for tissue-cultured Daylilies often do not bloom true, and in the case of ‘Clothed in Glory,’ the first thing lost is the splendid ruffled gold edge. You can be sure that with Wayside Daylilies, you are getting the true breeding. Daylilies are one of the easiest and most rewarding perennials to grow. They stand up to rough conditions from poor soil to heat, humidity, and even drought without turning a petal, and need no maintenance. They leaf out a bit late in spring, which makes them ideal in the bulb garden, where their emerging foliage helps hide the dying stems of the Daffodils. Space these 2-year-old bareroot plants about 18 inches apart for a solid mass of color. Zones 5-9.”

Reblooms very heavily on semi-evergreen plants. The most spectacular Daylily of the season, ‘Crystal Pinot’ regales you with TWO bands of edging, a matching eyezone, neat ruffling, and lovely color combination. It is hardy through zone 3 in the north (and there are murmurings of zone 2, difficult as that may be to believe!), very vigorous, and exceptionally resistant to heat and drought. The perfect perennial, a mix of beauty and vigor. These large flowers appear first in early summer, then repeat lavishly near season’s end. The base color is a peachy apricot blend, very handsome on broad, overlapping petals with neat ruffling. But it’s the two bands of edging that really set this Daylily apart.

The outermost edging is very thin, a shade of apricot-pink that matches the base color of the petals. The broader edge is deep red to burgundy, just the color of the eyezone! This plant reaches 20 inches tall and spreads 2 to 3 feet wide, ready to divide into many new plants every few years. Semi-evergreen, it is ideal for mass planting as well as small groupings in the border and even in containers. A stellar new Daylily, Daylilies are among the easiest of all perennials to grow, withstanding heat, humidity, poor soil, drought, and cold effortlessly. They don’t mind a bit of neglect, and even spread over time, so that you can divide them every few years for plenty more color. Make ‘Crystal Pinot’ the focus of the Daylily garden for many seasons to come! Zones 3-9.

You would expect any Daylily with ‘Stella’ in its name to have something to say for itself when it comes to bloom strength, but ‘Stella in Red’ has surprised even the most jaded gardeners with its floriferousness. A constant rebloomer all summer long (and into fall in some climates), this very compact plant also sports a rich, deep shade of red almost unknown elsewhere in the Daylily family. These blooms are so richly colored they appear to glow, and they shade to nearly black at the base and tips — astonishing for a Daylily.

They begin in early summer and continue without fail all season long on plants just 18 inches high and 16 inches wide. Of course this is the perfect companion to ‘Stella de Oro’ — even the size is a good match! — but it also makes a gleaming jewel of a planting in any setting, large or small, on its own. Try it beside the blazing driveway, along the backyard fence, winding through the sunny perennial garden, or outlining a path. The color is fade-proof, the growth robust, and the budding very, very heavy. You just can’t go wrong with this little powerhouse!Daylilies are among the easiest of all perennials to grow, withstanding heat, humidity, poor soil, drought, and cold effortlessly. They don’t mind a bit of neglect, and even spread over time, so that you can divide them every few years for plenty more color.

One of the Most Fragrant Ever!

Frilly, flouncy ruffled blooms really catch the eye.

Winner of multiple awards and an absolute showstopper in any garden, this intensely fragrant Daylily is hardy from the far north to the deep south. If you have a spare foot of soil left in your sunny garden, devote it to the glorious ruffled blooms of ‘Elegant Candy’.The flowers measure about 4 inches wide, but tend to look larger because of their intense ruffling. Pink with a large reddish-carmine eyezone, they jump out from the garden on plants about 2 feet high and wide.

Expect the first flush in early summer, with a repeat toward season’s end.’Elegant Candy’ is a dormant tetraploid, meaning that it’s got twice the chromosomes of diploid Daylilies, for greater garden vigor and flower power. It’s dormant in cold climates, so you can grow it all the way through zone 3 in the north without worrying about frostkill — the aboveground growth will vanish with the first hard frost, and the plant will pop back up better than ever in spring! But the best feature of this Daylily is its sweet scent.

Many Daylilies bear a ghost of a fragrance, but ‘Elegant Candy’s’ is rich, bold, and unmistakeable. A pleasure in the Daylily garden, it perfumes its less fortunate cousins!Like all Daylilies, ‘Elegant Candy’ is quite happy in punishing sun, heat, and humidity. Once established in your garden, it’s even drought-tolerant, though it will bloom its best when given adequate water. Low-maintenance and foolproof to grow, this perennial can be divided every 4 or 5 years into even more glorious plants!Space plants about 3 feet apart in any well-drained garden soil, and pamper them the first year to get their root system established. Easy and so beautiful! Zones 3-9.”

This unique Daylily demands a place of honor in the garden or your finest container. Not only are its blooms quite large, but they are nicely ruffled and sport both an eyezone, a central white stripe, and two layers of edging. What else could possibly be displayed on this rich purple bloom.Measuring 5 3/4 inches wide, these flowers open early in the season, then put on a fine encore at summer’s end. The upper petals are the most dramatic, with a thin white picotee that really outlines every petal clearly.

This in turn gives way to a purple band around the petals tips, which matches the prominent purple eyezone at the base. And to cap it all off, every petal boasts a slender white stripe right down the center! Even the glowing yellow-green throat is eye-catching!’Martina Verhaert’ is a semi-evergreen tetraploid, sporting twice the chromosome count of many Hemerocallis, and keeping its strappy foliage through winter in mild and warm climates. It reaches 20 inches high and 18 to 24 inches wide, a good choice for edging, mass planting, and accents.Introduced by Morss in 1998, ‘Martina Verhaert’ is at last available to Wayside gardeners.
