When we saw this stunning new Amaryllis in Holland, we knew we must offer it. The blooms are very long-lasting, with long, slender, slightly recurved petals of lime-green, darkening toward the center into a star shape. They arise several to a stem on sturdy, compact plants that need no staking. Absolutely unparalleled for holiday decoration, they are also a fine addition to the late-winter home, brightening the room with one-of-a-kind color. There has never been an Amaryllis like ‘Evergreen’ available for American gardeners before!

This bulb is hardy only in zones 8-11, but can be grown year after year as a winter-blooming houseplant. Pot it up in October and leave it in bright light until the blooms begin to appear. Then set it in indirect light and enjoy many weeks of splendid color! Let the blooms pass and the foliage turn brown and fall over before storing it for next holiday’s display.

Easy and stunningly beautiful, Amaryllis Evergreen makes a very special gift.

Zones 8-11.

Is there any more beautiful, magnificently fragrant white Lily than Casa Blanca, the classic Easter Lily? If so, we can’t imagine how it could improve on the clean lines, pure white color, and sweet aroma of this long-time favorite.

Fully 10 inches across, these wide-open lilies are beautifully set with handsome auburn anthers and fresh green throats. Up to 8 blooms open on each stem.

The effect is of dazzling clean color–and each bloom lasts a week or more.

Casa Blanca Lily is borne on strong stems (great for cutting!) from mid to late summer. Plants reach 4 to 5 feet tall with fresh green foliage that sets off the blooms nicely. They multiply eagerly to form spectacular colonies over time. Wonderful inter-planted (and in mixed arrangements) with its pastel-pink sister, Casa Rosa.

Plant in full sun to partial shade in moisture-retentive, well-drained soil.

Hardiness: Zones 5-9.

The First Orienpet, Parent of Them All!

Bred half a century ago by Leslie Woodriff, this is the original Orienpet Lily, combining the best of Oriental and trumpet lilies into one delightful plant.

If only other flowers possessed a tenth of this exciting Lily’s drama and color depth, what stunning places our gardens would be! ‘Black Beauty’ is the original Orienpet cultivar, bred half a century ago and now the parents of many a modern variety! A magnificent mid- to late-summer bloomer, it sets masses of deep claret-colored blooms, each delicately outlined in white. You couldn’t get better, more nicely defined color if you painted the blooms yourself, and with this super-easy plant, the show just gets better with each passing year.

These flowers are breathtaking. Their recurved (bent back) petals are a deep cherry red with a lime green throat, bold brick-red anthers, and the faintest white edging you’ve ever seen — just a dusting of “notice me” contrast! No wonder ‘Black Beauty’ was the first Orienpet admitted to the Lily Society’s Hall of Fame!

The blooms measure 3 to 4 inches across and arise in large, showy clusters on plants that reach 3 to 4 feet tall but only 1½ feet wide. This Lily colonizes nicely once it feels at home in your garden, so leave room for it to spread or plan to divide it every 2 to 3 years.

Needless to say, the blooms are ideal for cutting. Very thick and waxy, they hold up a long time indoors, even in the hot, humid late-season weather. Indoors or out, they are splendid companions to other Lilies. Plant them in the middle to back of the sunny border or bed, letting them arise behind lower-growing shrubs and perennials.

Now, you may be wondering what the devil an “Orienpet” Lily is. Well, as its name hints, it’s a hybrid of Oriental and trumpet types. Renowned breeder Leslie Woodriff pioneered the Orienpets. A cross of Lilium speciosum rubrum and Lilium henryi, ‘Black Beauty’ was the first to sport the now classic Orienpet characteristics of long bloomtime, nodding, reflexed flowers that arise in gigantic candelabra on plants so vigorous and staunch they don’t need staking. As the years pass, the plants just get bigger and better, sending out bulblets to start new Lilies among the old.

Space these plants about 2 feet apart in well-drained, enriched soil, and water during dry periods, especially during the first year. Hardy in zones 3-8.

Few sights can equal an early-spring display of cheery pink bells, wonderfully fragrant and so colorful in the drab end-of-winter landscape. Gardeners have longed for this bright companion to the taller white Lily-of-the-Valley, but until now, the plants have been difficult to find and quite expensive.

At long last, the prices have come down to earth, and you can plant this beauty in all those shady spots that need a little oomph — under that leafless winter shrub, in the shade of tall trees, in the bare patches where ground cover has not yet wakened from its winter sleep!Just 7 inches tall, this plant sports broad, fresh green foliage and thin flowerstalks, each bearing a dozen or so fat bells dangling from curved stems.

A lovely choice for indoor color, too, its perfume is sweet but never overwhelming. Hardy all the way from zone 7 to zone 3, this dainty delight is a long-lived treat you will look forward to as each winter ends.

Here’s a color combination you don’t see everyday — bright orange-red blooms generously striped with white! With stems just 13 1/2 inches high, this South African Amaryllis almost qualifies as a miniature, making the 7-inch blooms look even larger! Stars and Stripes® is ready to bloom in 32 days after planting and produces 4 to 7 blooms per plant.

South African Amaryllis are much quicker to bloom (ready in just 4 to 6 weeks), easier to care for, and more willing to transfer to the garden after flowering than traditional varieties. If you live south of zone 7, just plant them out after their winter display, and they will form big colonies within a few short years. Everywhere else, sink them (pot and all) intro the warm spring soil to rest until it’s time for another glorious season of indoor winter color. Start them just 4 to 6 weeks before desired bloomtime! Zones 8-11.

Plant Patent Applied For. Cultivar name: ‘Black Adder’.Is there anything more magnificent in the summer and early fall garden than long-blooming, butterfly- and hummingbird-friendly Hyssop? This new variety will complement older Hyssops with its nearly-black buds and rich, deeply-colored red-violet blooms. You just can’t find a better, more carefree performer for the sunny bed or border.

These flowers open on long racemes, each quite small but jammed together so tightly and profusely that the effect is of a long wand of solid color! And what a color it is. The buds are nearly black, bursting into rich violet and deep red tones as the petals unfurl. Spectacular Black Adder blooms from early summer right into fall, much longer than older varieties. This is because it’s sterile, so it WON’T toss seeds all over your yard. It devotes all its energy to flower production, and you are going to love the results.

Black Adder has been found to grow successfully in a wide range of climates, from wet and cold to warm and dry, humid to arid. Give it full sun and good drainage, and after the first year you’ll find that it even puts up with periods of drought. A superbly garden-worthy perennial, deserving of a place in your garden! This plant reaches 3 feet high and about 2 1/2 feet wide. Space the plants 2 feet apart for a good dense, bushy look. Zones 6-9.

The flowers are distinctive, too — with a greenish-white base and heavy maroon markings, they resemble that winter-blooming favorite, the Lenten Rose (Helleborus orientalis).

A native of southern France and Sicily, this heirloom bulb has been a treasured feature of European gardens for centuries, and a single planting will convince you that it needs a permanent home in your landscape, too. The large bloom clusters arch elegantly atop very strong stems, sending the starry blooms cascading down and out for an eye-catching effect. Requiring very little summer moisture, it is content in any sunny spot.

Each 3-inch flowerhead is studded with up to 50 blooms!

A summer garden without Allium is like a cake without frosting — where’s the sweetness and fun? This super-easy bulb is just made for dotting around the sunny annual, perennial, or shrub border, popping up on the patio, and bobbing in a sea of purple in the backyard. The flowers are perfect for cutting, but you may find them so charming in the garden that you have to grow two stands — one just for the vase, the other wherever you need bold, bright “”punctuation”" in the garden!Purple Sensation is one of the deepest, richest violets ever grown in this family.

The 3-inch globes are packed with up to 50 starry florets, and you’ll enjoy watching them turn from little green nubs to brilliant outstretched blooms. They arise on a thick, fat 3-foot stalk, with a skirt of silvery-green leaves at the base that looks great even when the plant’s not in bloom. And if you think Daffodils are easy, wait until you grow this Allium.Purple Sensation looks terrific among billowy, airy plants such as Hardy Geraniums and Russian Sage, and feels right at home in the hot, dry soil favored by Sedum and Iceplant. It’s also fantastic among flowering annuals of all types, and it complements dwarf shrubs such as fragrant Leptodermis magnificently. In other words, you just can’t go wrong as long as you choose a hot, sunny spot with very good soil drainage. (If your soil is heavy or clay-ey, like mine here in the south, just add some humus or compost at planting time.)

Now, Purple Sensation will self-sow all over the place in your garden if you let it, so I recommend snipping the flowerheads as they fade. (If you let it sow, the new plants will have pale mauve blooms, not nearly as attractive as Purple Sensation) But that’s about it for maintenance — expect it to reappear for years to come as soon as the weather heats up in summer.Very resistant to extreme heat, cold, and drought, Purple Sens.

A striking accent to pastel-toned blooms, and a long-lasting cut flower. (Heirloom, 1800). One of the most dramatic members of the Allium family, this late-spring to early-summer bloomer sports masses of outstretched stars in a rounded 2-inch flowerhead. Each wine-red bloom has a round green center and tiny green pads on the tip of each petal; as the blooms mature, the colors darken to purplish-black. Superb fresh or dried, this richly-colored gem stands out in the sunny garden. Plant reaches 2 to 3 feet tall and 10 inches wide.

Early in summer, 2 1/2- to 3-foot stems are topped by gigantic violet-pink flowerheads — some fully 8 inches wide! This terrific Dutch hybrid blooms for up to 3 weeks, repeating more reliably than its cousin, Allium giganteum. Because it’s sterile, it puts all its energy into producing more flowers instead of making seeds — and you reap the benefits! Ideal combined with low-growing, mounding perennials.

Wonderfully fragrant. Whatever else you plant this year, make room for this amazing Allium. It’s not to be missed, a fragrant, highly unusual early summer bloomer that gives you not one but two “”looks”" on every bloomstem. You simply won’t believe it, so be sure to place it in a highly visible spot where visitors can exclaim over its beauty. This 12- to 18-inch-high plant has a large, thick, sturdy central stem like other Allium, terminating in a bloomstalk that forms a giant sphere, with tiny flowers covering all sides.

But unlike others, the bloomstems are stiff and strong, and all different lengths, so the lovely starry little pink blooms look like fireworks in the sky rather than a solid ball of color — some are closer than others. The flowers last for weeks in mid-spring, and after they fall, the second ’season’ of bloom begins. For when the florets have dropped, all the stiff, straight “”spokes”" of the stems create a giant tumbleweed of a bloom up to 18 inches in diameter.Often called the Tumbleweed Onion, which captures the spicy sweetness of this plant’s fragrance.

A. schubertii makes a fantastic addition to Everlasting arrangements. The stems last for many months, and can be displayed alone or in a variety of combinations. Really showy and unusual, they liven up those tired old Statice and Florist’s Poppies wonderfully.Deer-resistant and unfriendly to insects and other small pests, Allium is useful in the garden as well as beautiful.Give A. schubertii plenty of sunshine and well-drained soil that tends to be on the dry side. Plant the large bulbs 4 inches deep and about 8 inches apart for a sea of “”tumbleweeds”.

The lavender blooms are joined by rosy-red calyces for a charming two-tone effect. So compact that it can be grown in containers, this lovely Anise Hyssop sports tall, elegant spikes of lavender with rosy-red calyces in late summer. Lasting for many weeks, the blooms attract butterflies by the dozen, and are ideal for cutting. Even when not in bloom, however, this carefree perennial is attractive, thanks to its richly aromatic blue-green foliage and neat size.Purple Haze reaches just 18 inches high and a foot wide.

Very floriferous, it is perfect for up-close enjoyment, where the slightest brush against its foliage releases the sweet scent of licorice. Bring it onto the patio, up the porch steps, and along the driveway, as well as in the border and as an accent planting. And if you like Purple Haze, be sure to consider another compact variety, Coronado.

Few sights compare to a fully-blooming Coronado in the sunny late-season garden, its blooms radiant orange-yellow, its peppermint-scented foliage tossing silvery glints, and its habit neat and compact. The longest-blooming member of its family, it demonstrates superb heat tolerance, attracting butterflies and hummingbirds as it flowers through the worst August weather.Just 15 to 20 inches high and up to 20 inches wide, this adaptable perennial is one of the easiest and most rewarding to grow in any sun-soaked setting.

The foliage releases its scent when touched, so plant Coronado? where you will brush past it along pathways, at the front of the border, and in containers on the patio. And the blooms are superb for cutting as well as garden enjoyment. Very resistant to diseases, pests, humidity, poor soil, and even a bit of drought, Coronado? belongs in meadow gardens as well as in the landscape of any southern and southwestern garden! And if you love Agastache as we do, please consider Black Adder and Sonoran Sunset as well.

Darkest Foliage and Best BranchingDeep and dense, the foliage on this small tree is highly aromatic. A delight in miniature form, this splendid new Japanese Cedar reaches only 5 feet tall and 7 feet wide after 10 years’ growth, but every branch is suffused with color, fragrance, and even a handful of small cones! Very slow-growing, ‘Black Dragon’ is drought-tolerant and ready to thrive in any sunny to partly shaded area. The habit of this evergreen conifer is fastigiate when young, becoming increasingly pyramidal as the years pass.

The branching is very dense, and the foliage the darkest, richest green yet seen in the family. When it begins to set cones, they are small and unbelievably profuse.Asking only for protection from strong, drying winds, ‘Black Dragon’ is ideal in containers as well as the garden. Its lush habit looks full and healthy year-round, and it is hardy to -10 degrees F. Make this fine Japanese Cedar a standout in your landscape.

This collection is comprised of 3 components. Picea ‘Pumila’ 40354. Boasting greater vigor, darker green foliage, and a more dense, full centered habit than previous Dwarf Norway Spruces, this evergreen dwarf is the ideal accent Conifer. It is resistant to winter burn and able to take more summer heat than earlier varieties, slowly growing into a very bushy, symmetrically rounded form. Qty 1 Trade Gallon (3qt). Zones 3 – 7. Thuja occidentalis ‘Rheingold’ 47603. This slow growing evergreen dwarf sports a new color for each season.

In spring, golden-orange highlights mark the new foliage. By summer, the leaves have turned bright green with yellow overtones, and in autumn they burnish rich copper, keeping their color all winter. Best in consistently moist soil with protection from drying winds, it is an excellent choice for the foundation, rock garden, or containers. Qty 1 Trade Gallon (3qt). Zones 2 – 7. Thuja occidentalis ‘Umbraculifera’ 46386. With dense yet lacey foliage, needle-thin and a rich blue-green, this Northern Whitecedar offers evergreen beauty in compact form. The foliage turns shades of gold and brown among the green in autumn, remaining attractive through winter.

Easy to grow in soils ranging from the boggy to quite dry, its very low stature and dramatically arched branches make it ideal for bonsai, but if allowed to grow to its full height, it is a commanding presence in the border, foundation, or rockery. Found in German gardens since Victorian times, it is very rare in this country, yet grows readily despite air pollution, drought, and poor soil. A superb signature plant for the conifer garden.

A Magnificent Specimen for the Japanese Garden, turns a bronzy purple in winter. Few trees have the majestic look or easy care of this splendid Japanese Cedar. Radicans is a quick grower, and is not prone to the tip blight from which many other C. japonica cultivars suffer. It forms a tall, slender, wonderfully dense evergreen that offers year-round beauty as a privacy screen or specimen!Reaching 40 to 45 feet high but just 20 feet wide, this tree displays an elegant silhouette. It is a quick grower, reaching 12 to 16 feet tall within 5 years of planting. And although it’s an evergreen, this Conifer turns a rich bronzy-purple in winter — a nice change of pace for the garden.

The foliage is exceptionally dense on this tree. Dark green and feathery, it offers good contrast to blue-leafed evergreens. And because Radicans does not suffer from tip blight like most other Japanese Cedars, it always looks its best.Thrives in full sun to partial shade and any well-drained garden soil, though moist, enriched types are best.Space these trees 20 feet apart for a dense privacy screen or perimeter planting.
