The Incomparable and Hard-to-Find Double-Flowered Tiger Lily!

Showy, long-lasting blooms boast exquisite form and fascinating speckles.

(Heirloom 1870) ‘Flore Pleno’ displays the same deep orange-scarlet color and dark chocolate speckles as single-flowered Tiger Lilies, but adds layer upon layer of reflexed petals for a distinctively tentacled appearance. The generous 4- to 5-inch blooms lack stamens, making them an ideal cut-flower choice for gardeners with allergies. The plants can reach a stately 6 feet tall, towering over perennial neighbors in mixed borders and containers, and produce many blooms per stem throughout their late summer and early fall season.

Grow ‘Flore Pleno’ in full sun in rich, moist, well-drained soil. It prefers a slightly acidic soil but will also do well in neutral and slightly alkaline soil, too. It doesn’t require as much of a cold period as most Lilies, so it is particularly well-suited to Southern regions. As the season progresses, you’ll see small purplish-black bulbils forming at the leaf axils along the stem. Mature bulbils may start to leaf out and will eventually drop to the ground and root by themselves, but you can gently remove and plant them yourself. They’ll grow true to their parent, increasing your stunning display with plenty left over to share with friends.

Zones 4-9.
