The Classic Native Fern, Easy to Grow and SO Lovely.
Billowy and beautiful, it makes a fine companion to all perennials in the shrub garden.
This superb North American Fern is fine and delicate in appearance, yet so hardy and tolerant of dry and even poor soils! An airy, celery-green presence in full to partial shade, it is a must-have for the border, bed, or even containers.
The fronds are long, tapering, and beautifully symmetrical, with a delicate look that belies their tough-as-nails constitution! This adaptable native is found widespread across the country in moist, shady forests and meadows. Perfect for dappled sun to heavy shade, this beloved Fern is easy to grow and very reliable.
Reaching 15 to 24 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide, Lady Fern is suitable as an accent plant to dot among the Hostas and Astilbes of the shade garden. Best in light, highly organic soil with ample moisture during its growing season, particularly the first year after planting. Do not plant too deep; set the crowns at or just below soil level. A year-round mulch is recommended to keep moisture in the soil.
Zones 4-8.
